Of course, even the best-sounding bassist will be wasted if not recorded properly. The farther up the neck you go, the rounder and louder the tones tend to become. Voicing is yet another key element: For instance, an open G (first string) will sound quite different from a fretted G played on the second string, fifth fret, or, for that matter, the third string, 10th fret. And while bassists generally prefer playing with their fingers, some may use their thumb in order to achieve a rounder sound, or even a very thick pick for greater articulation. Altering the tone control on both the bass and the amp can help the bassist achieve the desired timbre. Strings are a good place to start: For example, flat-wound strings, which produce a darker tone, are typically preferred by traditional jazz and classic-rock bassists, whereas bassists who record funk, metal or modern rock often favor round-wound strings for their brightness and flexibility (there are also half-wound strings, which combine the articulation of round-wounds with the feel of a flat-wound string). It is also important to have the right kind of bass tone in order to match the type of music you’re making. A good example of a “musical” bass line can be heard on Led Zeppelin’s “Ramble On,” a song that stands out mainly due to bassist John Paul Jones’ skillful playing. Pepper album was directly influenced by Pet Sounds), to Primus bassist Les Claypool, who once called Pet Sounds “the incredible bass player’s record.” Melody also plays a key role in the development of a bass passage. Wilson’s work has impacted everyone from Paul McCartney (whose playing on the Beatles’ Sgt. On Pet Sounds, the Beach Boys’ legendary masterpiece, songwriter Brian Wilson practically reinvented rock bass technique with moving bass lines that employed thirds, fifths, even major-sevenths against the main chord progression, rather than using the standard root notes (for that matter, Wilson often used two basses simultaneously - one electric and one acoustic upright). While bass lines tend to favor the root notes in any given chord progression, sometimes a little creativity can go a long way. A more sophisticated approach to locking in can be found on the Red Hot Chile Peppers’ ’90s hit “Under the Bridge.” If you listen to the song’s third verse (“It’s hard to believe…”), you’ll notice the way bassist Flea’s notes fit perfectly in time with drummer Chad Smith’s syncopated bass-drum pattern - both players even omit a single note every other verse on purpose. This kind of playing nicely supports the rhythm without drawing undue attention to the bass guitar - the bass is actually “felt” more than it is heard. In many Beatles songs, for instance, bassist McCartney typically alternates between the I (root note) and the V. For instance, in 4/4 time, the bass and bass drum would lock on the first and fourth beats, perhaps with the accent on the “1.” When locking in, very often less is more. One of the oldest and most important tools in a bassist’s skill set is known as “locking-in.” To properly lock in, the bassist finds the “pocket,” which is typically the rhythm pattern established by the bass drum. Understanding the techniques that these artists helped make famous is a good place to start. Over the years, players like Motown’s James Jamerson, the Beatles’ Paul McCartney, jazz-fusion ace Jaco Pastorious and many others helped give the bass a more prominent role in recorded music. Smart bass players intuitively know how to lock with the bass drum (or, conversely, play against the song’s main rhythm), provide inventive melodic ideas such as substituting thirds and fifths in place of the root note, while adding all necessary fills and walk-ups. In fact, when paired with the right drummer, a good bassist is capable of giving a demo a rock-solid foundation (and if you don’t have bottom, you don’t have anything, after all). To many people, the bass is the least important part of a recording project, which is a strange thing. There are presets, while Custom time frames are also available. Can you make a living from bartending in the US? Tourism is another key factor that affects bartender salary – which means the busier the bar, the more money you’re likely to make! In 2022, California, New York and Florida are listed among the top 3 most visited places in the US, making bartender work an attractive career move in the Golden State, Big Apple, and Sunshine State. Nowadays, many of the country's highest-paid bartenders hail from hotspots like San Francisco and New York City, which makes sense - as these two cities are in the top three most expensive places to live in the US. Generally speaking, bartenders tend to earn more in those states where the cost of living is higher on a national average. The average bartender salary is highest in the Northeast in states like New York and Massachusetts, as well as in the West and Northwest in states like Washington and California. Where are the highest bartender salaries in the US? On the other hand, middle-class pubs and restaurants tend to have the most steady amount of visitors, so the average salary of a bartender in these locations is normally more even-keeled. Of course, this greatly depends on an individual’s level of experience, the kind of establishment they work in, and even which shifts they normally work.įor example, a weekend shift in an upscale bar will most likely rake in more money than a Tuesday night shift in a shabby sports bar (unless, the Super Bowl is on). From the average rates to statewide differences and the most lucrative cities for work, here’s everything there is to know about bartender pay in the US… What’s the average annual bartender salary in the US? While infinitely beneficial for wrapper design, visual-clue based wrappers, referred to as visual wrappers, come with an awful drawback at execution time: The natural approach, which is currently in use, is to render the page internally via an embedded browser. The semi-automatic wrapper generation process for complex websites, inclusive of testing, now typically takes a couple of hours at most, rather than a couple of days using traditional methods.ĭrawbacks of visual-clue based data extraction. The possibility of defining, modifying, and testing wrappers in a visual fashion has relieved wrapper designers from the tedious task of having to decipher the HTML code of each target web page, and of writing sequential programs that act on it. The use of visual clues and “page geography” often leads to more precise and more robust wrappers . For example, there is a rule in the DIADEM knowledge base which, in simplified form, says the following: The closest text chunk below or above an input field on a Web page is (with high probability and in absence of better information) the explanatory label of this field. Most modern data extraction tools, including those mentioned, use visual clues and visual interaction in the wrapper generation process and rely on graphical and geometric concepts such as the distance between two rendered elements . Using such rules and a set of URLs as input, the DIADEM system autonomously extracts data from sites belonging to this domain.Īdvantages of visual-clue based data extraction. In DIADEM the knowledge for extracting data from websites belonging to an application domain (e.g., real-estate) is provided in form of Datalog rules. OXPath is the target language of the fully automated high-precision visual-clue based wrapper generator DIADEM . The OXPath data extraction language enriches XPath with simulated user interaction, and node and form field selection based on visual features. Other advanced semi-automatic tools are, for example, import.io, Mozenda , FMiner , iMacros , Visual Web Ripper , and the BODE system . Examples are tools such as STALKER and Lixto . Since around the year 2000, sophisticated semi-automated visual and interactive tools have been developed, which allow users to define wrappers via visual point-and-click actions. Among those are flight search engines and media intelligence companies. Other sectors have adopted Web data extraction as part of their core business. International construction firms automatically extract tenders from hundreds of websites. Electronics retailers, for example, are interested in the daily prices offered by their competitors, as are hotels and supermarket chains. In fact, Web data extraction is nowadays heavily and proficuously used by various branches of industry. They use wrapper generators that produce wrappers which continuously or periodically extract information from relevant websites and store this information in a highly structured format in a local database. Given that many companies and institutions need to access outside data for better decision making, they have to rely on automated Web data extraction programs, also known as wrappers. This statement is, of course, wrong: Web data relevant to most applications is distributed over heterogeneously structured websites, usually does not come with a schema, and cannot be directly queried, except by manual keyword search. “The Web is the largest database” is a sentence one sometimes hears. We discuss research challenges for extending our approach to a general method applicable to a yet larger number of cases. This system works in the vast majority of test cases and produces very fast and extremely resource-efficient wrappers. We present the first algorithm and system performing such an automated translation on suitably restricted types of web sites. In this paper, we demonstrate the principal feasibility of automatically translating browser-based wrappers into “browserless” wrappers. However, creating and maintaining browserless wrappers of high precision requires specialists, and is prohibitively labor-intensive at scale. In contrast, it is magnitudes more resource-efficient to use a “browserless” wrapper which directly accesses a web server through HTTP requests, and takes the desired data directly from the raw replies. Such scrapers (or wrappers) are therefore expensive to execute, in terms of time and network traffic. Most modern web scrapers use an embedded browser to render web pages and to simulate user actions. There is no need to worry as you can always download it later using conda. You might think you will be missing out on software available from Anaconda. It is possible to download just Python itself from for an even smaller download, but the conda tool is very valuable and what we will use to set up a robust environment. The distribution also install conda, an important and necessary tool to manage packages and environments. Both of the programs aren’t necessary to do data science with Python. The distribution comes with a few other pieces of software such as Anaconda Navigator, a graphical user interface for those less comfortable with the command line, and qtconsole, a terminal-like program with the ability to make graphs inline. Most of these packages are unnecessary when first getting started. You can see the package list for each installation. The Anaconda distribution installs the latest stable version of Python along with over 200 packages. The current download size sits at around 600MB and will take up over 2GB of disk space once installed. My main criticism with the Anaconda distribution is the amount of excess software and Python packages that are installed onto your system. While installing the Anaconda distribution is a valid way to get started, I believe there is a better approach. Installing this distribution with the default settings should allow you to quickly get started doing data science work in Python. Primarily because today, we are looking at all these data, keeping in mind, what maturity level are each organization isn't? Right. Venky: So, I'm not surprised with the number of challenges that every industry is going through. What do you think about the pain points that were shared by the FinOps foundation responses and how does this relate to what we've seen from our own customers here at CoreStack? And I thought one of the interesting points in the discussion of pain points themself was a great place to start. we'll focus on a little bit of the challenges and pain points that people have had forecasting, how we can better forecast things as well as you utilize automation in the process. And the other aspect is they have covered various aspects of FinOps itself from an adoption standpoint with respect to the allocation, show back, chargeback, automation and so on.Ĭhris: And, I think we we've got a number of these topics we're going to cover over the next couple of days and weeks. And when I compare those challenges with the conversation that I'm having with the customers, they pretty much resonate, of course the order changes based on the priority, but clearly there that is being reflected. Number two, there’s a whole lot of coverage is on the challenges itself, there are about 17 challenges. But there are, we cannot say that there is industry which are not but anybody who is moving into cloud are certainly adopting FinOps, that's number one. The survey does provide us the data point with respect to various industries and we can see that leading the pack is financial services industry followed by healthcare, retail, and telecom. Clearly one of the key areas is FinOps being practiced across the board and the answer is yes. What they have done successfully in this survey is they have really taken a step into the coverage of areas within various aspects of FinOps itself. Lot of best practices are being defined So, any type of organization can pretty much come and look into it. They are organizations who are helping the cloud cost management professionals to have a better efficiency with respect to managing the cost itself. First of all, I think people need to understand what FinOps organization's vision is. Pleasure to doing this fireside chat with you. Maybe you could tell everybody a little bit more about the survey and who took it. And kind of set things up last year, there was about 44 questions and then this year in the report, they had about 65 and over 1000 people answered this survey to give them the results. There's some interesting trends emerging and it's really starting to show those and Venky, I know you've been involved with this for a little while so I want to get your take on it. We're in the second year of it and reading through it, there's quite a bit of information on here and I think it really relates to what our customers and prospective customers are looking for. Today joining me is Venky Perumal, who is our Field CTO and we're going to be talking about the State of FinOps report that was released by the FinOps Foundation and it was a great report that's now been made annual.
